Crossbench presses for femicide royal commission

The government has rejected a call for a royal commission into femicide and domestic violence during Question Time.

Warringah MP Zali Steggall used the crossbench’s allotted question to urge the government to establish a royal commission into femicide and domestic violence.

Social services minister Tanya Plibersek said another royal commission was unnecessary.

Plibersek said frontline workers were calling for action rather than more reports, noting that more than 1,000 recommendations already existed from at least eight royal commissions and major reviews.

She said the government was focused on implementing those recommendations and had committed $4bn to 122 commonwealth-led recommendations across 583 initiatives nationwide.

Plibersek said the government agreed with the urgency raised by Steggall and other crossbench MPs, but said progress required delivery rather than further inquiries.

Opposition leader Sussan Ley spoke on indulgence to back efforts to address domestic violence before criticising Labor over a past commitment to fund 500 frontline family violence workers.

Speaker Milton Dick rebuked Ley, calling the remarks disrespectful to the House.
