Parliament honours former senator Nick Bolkus

The prime minister has paid tribute to former Labor senator Nick Bolkus ahead of Question Time.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese honoured the late Nick Bolkus in the House before questions began.

Bolkus was elected to federal parliament in 1980 and became the first Greek Australian to serve as a cabinet minister.

He retired from politics in 2005.

Albanese praised Bolkus’s commitment to democracy, public service and the Australian Labor Party.

Opposition leader Sussan Ley also paid tribute, describing Bolkus as a strong advocate for multiculturalism and refugee resettlement during his time as immigration minister.

Ley said Bolkus served his state, party and country according to his convictions.
