Allan apologises over antisemitism failure

Victorian premier Jacinta Allan has apologised for failing to prevent the rise of antisemitism ahead of the Bondi terror attack.

Premier Jacinta Allan delivered the apology while moving a condolence motion in the Victorian parliament.

The motion honoured the 15 people killed when two gunmen allegedly inspired by Islamic State targeted a Hanukah event at Sydney’s Bondi beach on 14 December.

It was the first sitting of the Victorian parliament since the attack.

Allan said governments had failed to act on warnings about rising antisemitism and acknowledged responsibility for preventing such attacks.

She said the failure had left Jewish communities feeling unsafe, adding that their fears and warnings had been real.

Allan said her government stood with Jewish Victorians and would defend their right to gather and practise their faith without fear.

She pledged to confront antisemitism wherever it appears in Victoria.
