Liberal and National MPs attended a church service in Canberra this morning ahead of the resumption of federal parliament, with some joking they needed “divine intervention”.
Parliamentarians gathered at an ecumenical service before sittings began, where media questioned MPs about party unity, leadership and whether prayers were being offered for a Coalition reunion.
Liberal MP and shadow minister Scott Buchholz joked outside the church that divine intervention was needed, drawing laughter from colleagues. Other Coalition MPs brushed off similar questions as they entered.
Nationals MP Anne Webster said she would pray for the Coalition to reunite when asked by reporters.
Liberal MP and shadow minister Andrew Wallace addressed leadership speculation, saying opposition leader Sussan Ley had the support of the party room and his full backing.
Journalists also questioned Ley as she arrived, but she declined to comment, saying she could not be late for the service.
Opposition figures including shadow treasurer Ted O’Brien also attended the service. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Ley are expected to speak to media after leaving the church
