David Littleproud survives Nationals leadership spill vote

David Littleproud has survived a leadership spill after a challenge from within the Nationals failed at a party room meeting in Canberra.

The Nationals whip, Michelle Landry, confirmed on Monday that a motion moved by backbencher Colin Boyce to spill the leadership was unsuccessful.

Nationals MPs met ahead of the federal parliament’s return to debate both Littleproud’s leadership and the future of the Coalition with the Liberal Party.

The meeting also considered a separate motion from senior Nationals MP Darren Chester calling for urgent talks to reform the Coalition. Guardian Australia understands there was some support for the proposal, including from former Nationals leader Michael McCormack.

Boyce had earlier conceded his attempt to unseat Littleproud was unlikely to succeed.
