Fuel Shortages Hit Regions as Panic Buying Begins

Australia’s fuel price surge has reached a new level — and now regulators are stepping in.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has summoned major fuel suppliers and retailers to an emergency meeting, demanding answers over rapidly rising petrol prices.

Prices have already pushed past 230 cents per litre in most capital cities, placing immediate pressure on households and businesses.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the meeting is about accountability.

He warned that companies will be required to justify their pricing — and any evidence of wrongdoing will be dealt with seriously.

“If misconduct is found, we expect the ACCC to throw the book at them,” he said.

The companies called in include global and domestic giants such as Chevron, BP and Ampol, all key players in Australia’s fuel supply chain.

The move comes as panic buying begins to appear in some regional areas, with reports of petrol stations running dry amid fears of shortages.

Behind the surge is a sharp rise in global oil prices.

Oil has jumped by around 40% in March, driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East and disruption to the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil routes.

That global shock is now flowing through to Australian bowsers.

But how much of the increase is justified — and how much may be excessive — is exactly what the regulator is now investigating.

Fuel pricing is complex, involving global markets, shipping, refining and retail margins.

Still, the ACCC’s intervention signals growing concern that Australians could be paying more than necessary.

For drivers, the impact is immediate.

Higher petrol prices are already feeding into transport costs, food prices and overall cost of living — especially in regional areas with fewer alternatives.

What happens next depends on what the watchdog finds.

If companies can justify the increases, prices may remain high as long as global tensions continue.

But if misconduct is uncovered, the consequences could be serious — including penalties and stronger regulation.
