‘Changed me’: NSW deputy premier returns after cancer battle

NSW Deputy Premier Prue Car is returning to work on Monday as the new school year begins, after taking leave for breast cancer treatment.

Car went on leave in June after revealing she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, marking her second major cancer battle in three years. The 43-year-old mother said the past seven months had been difficult.

In a video message released on Sunday, Car said the experience had “certainly changed me in so many ways”, but confirmed her commitment to public service remained unchanged.

She said she was looking forward to resuming work and continuing delivery for the people of NSW, her western Sydney community, and the government’s education agenda.

Car entered state parliament in 2015, representing the western Sydney seat of Londonderry. She has served as deputy premier since the Australian Labor Party won government in March 2023.

While undergoing treatment, Car remained deputy premier but stepped back from her ministerial portfolios of education, early learning and western Sydney. Those responsibilities were temporarily handled by fellow minister Courtney Houssos.

Car previously took leave in 2022 following an unrelated kidney cancer diagnosis.
