Nationals senator Matt Canavan has voiced opposition to the United States and Israeli strikes on Iran, warning that wars aimed at regime change often lead to long-term instability.
Speaking on the Seven Network’s Sunrise program, Canavan said he was concerned about what he described as shifting explanations from the US administration for the conflict.
Canavan said he had opposed the attacks and questioned the strategic outcome of such interventions.
His position differs from the stance taken by both the Australian government and the broader Coalition, which have supported the strikes while leaving questions about their legal basis to the United States and Israel.
The senator pointed to previous international conflicts, including Iraq, Libya, Syria and Afghanistan, arguing that attempts to change governments through military intervention have frequently produced unintended consequences.
Canavan also questioned what the next stage of the conflict might involve following the latest developments in Iran.
He said the international community should reflect on the long-term outcomes of previous military campaigns when considering the trajectory of the current conflict.
